Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

Author Guidelines

General Requirements
  1. The article is based on research in various disciplines, such as social science, religious studies, and modernity.
  2. The article must conform to the academic writing format.
  3. The article was written in English.
  4. The article is original and has not yet been published elsewhere.
  5. The article must be submitted online through Open Journal Systems (OJS) on http://journal.walisongo.ac.id/index.php/jsw
  6. The article is written using Microsoft Word RTF format, Cambria 12 font size, 1,5 space, A4 paper size, with approximately 5.000 to 7.000 words.
  7. Accepted articles will go through a proofreading process carried out by Proofreading Partner appointed by the Editor of JSW (Jurnal Sosiologi Walisongo). The proofreading cost is paid directly by the author to the proofreader

Particular Instructions

  1. The article does not contain the name of the author, affiliation, and email account. The name of the author, affiliation, and email address are submitted during the registration process on Open Journal System (OJS).
  2. The article must contain:
  • Title.  The title must meet the following requirements: that conforms to the following guidelines: 1) Article title must be eye-catching and reflect the main topic of the article. 2) The title must be coherent and straightforward and contain the main variables of the research. 3) The title should be no more than 20 words, including subtitles.
  • Abstract. This abstract must follow the following requirements: 1) The abstract is a summary of the article written in English and Indonesian. 2) The abstract must be written in one paragraph with a single space, and the maximum length is 150 words. 3)  The abstract must be straightforward and contains (a) an Introduction (logical reasoning such as the importance of the research); (b) the method (approaches or methods that are used); (c) the result of the research, and (d) Implication/contribution of the research.
  • Keywords. Keywords contain 3-5 keywords.
  • Introduction. The introduction must contain: a) Background contains a description or overview of social phenomena regarding the topic of a study carried out - length of one paragraph. b) Exposure to the findings of several similar studies (4 - 5 previous research studies) - length of 4 - 5 paragraphs. c) Exposure to the gap analysis of several similar studies mentioned in the previous paragraph - length of one paragraph. d) The novelty of the research - length of one paragraph. e) The aim or objectives of the research - length of one paragraph. f) The research questions or hypothesis - length of one paragraph. g) The method should contain the reasons for the research, the research approach, the research design, the process of determining data sources (informants, etc.), how to collect data, and the theory used in analyzing the data - length of 1-2 paragraphs.
  • Results and Discussion.  This section consists of several subheadings according to the topics discussed in the research objectives, for example: a) Subheading 1: Describe and discuss the first topic, including 5 to 7 paragraphs. b) Subheading 2: Describe and discuss the second topic,  including 5 to 7 paragraphs. c) Subheading 3: Describe and discuss the third topic, including 5 to 7 paragraphs. d) Subheading 4: Elaborate linking subheadings 1, 2, and 3, including 5 to 7 paragraphs. Describe the research implication or contribution in the last paragraph.
  • Conclusion. The conclusion is not a summary of the research. The conclusion contains answers to the research questions and the weaknesses of the research.
  • Acknowledgment. (if any). This short text acknowledges the contributions of specific colleagues, institutions, or agencies that aided the authors' efforts.
  • References. Citation and bibliographical style use ASA (American Sociological Association) referencing style; see here. A DOI for each reference must be provided if available. Although authors are not obliged to, they are suggested to use reference manager programs such as Mendeley.

  1. et al. is only used in writing citations with more than three authors. In the bibliography, et al. is not allowed. All authors must be mentioned.
