Post-Publication Discussion

Al-Hilal: Journal of Islamic Astronomy recognizes post-publication discussion as an essential component of academic integrity, transparency, and the continuous advancement of scholarly knowledge. The journal encourages constructive scholarly dialogue concerning published articles in Islamic astronomy and related disciplines, including critical comments, methodological evaluations, clarifications, and responses that contribute to the development of astronomical research and its applications in Islamic religious practice.

1. Submission of Post-Publication Comments

Readers, researchers, and members of the academic community may submit scholarly comments or responses concerning articles published in Al-Hilal: Journal of Islamic Astronomy. Submissions should address substantive academic issues, including theoretical frameworks, astronomical calculations, observational methods, data reliability, research methodology, interpretation of findings, the application of astronomical evidence in Islamic jurisprudence, or the implications of published research.

Relevant discussions may concern, among other topics, crescent moon visibility and calendar determination, astronomical criteria for the beginning of Hijri months, prayer time calculations, Qibla direction determination, historical astronomical sources, and the relationship between astronomy and Islamic legal reasoning.

All submissions must be evidence-based, scientifically or academically grounded, relevant to the published article, and written in a professional and respectful manner. Authors of comments should provide appropriate references, calculations, observational evidence, or other supporting materials where necessary. Personal attacks, defamatory statements, unsupported allegations, and submissions unrelated to the scholarly content of the article will not be considered.

2. Editorial Assessment

All post-publication comments and responses are subject to editorial assessment. The editor evaluates their relevance to the original article, scholarly merit, factual accuracy, methodological soundness, ethical compliance, and contribution to academic discourse.

Where necessary, the editor may request revisions, consult independent experts, examine supporting evidence, or seek clarification from the original authors. For discussions involving astronomical calculations, observational data, calendar criteria, or methodological disagreements, the editor may seek specialist assessment to ensure that technical claims are evaluated appropriately.

The journal reserves the right to reject submissions that do not meet its academic, editorial, or ethical standards. Editorial decisions must be fair, impartial, and independent of personal relationships, institutional affiliations, or differences in scholarly or religious perspectives.

3. Right of Response

When a post-publication comment raises substantive questions, criticisms, or alternative interpretations concerning a published article, the journal may invite the original authors to provide a response.

Authors are expected to address the issues raised objectively, provide relevant evidence or methodological explanations, acknowledge limitations where appropriate, and clarify any uncertainties in their original work. Where disagreements concern astronomical calculations, observational findings, or the interpretation of Islamic legal sources, responses should distinguish between verifiable evidence, methodological choices, and differences in scholarly interpretation.

The decision to publish a comment and its corresponding response rests with the editor. The journal seeks to ensure that legitimate academic disagreements are addressed fairly and that readers can access balanced, evidence-based scholarly discussion.

4. Corrections and Retractions

Post-publication discussions that identify potential errors, inaccuracies, methodological weaknesses, or concerns regarding research integrity will be assessed in accordance with the journal's publication ethics policies.

If a significant error is confirmed, the journal may publish a correction or other appropriate editorial notice. This may include errors in astronomical calculations, observational data, tables, figures, formulas, source attribution, or interpretations that materially affect the article's findings or conclusions.

If concerns indicate that the validity or integrity of an article may be seriously compromised, the editor may initiate further investigation, consult independent experts, and contact the authors or their affiliated institutions when appropriate.

Retraction may be considered when the findings of an investigation establish grounds for retraction under the journal's publication ethics policies. All corrective actions must be transparent, proportionate to the seriousness of the issue, and appropriately linked to the original publication to preserve the integrity of the scholarly record.

5. Ethical Standards and Confidentiality

All parties involved in post-publication discussions must uphold academic integrity, objectivity, fairness, and professional conduct. Authors, commenters, editors, and any invited experts must disclose relevant conflicts of interest and must not use the discussion process for personal, professional, institutional, or other inappropriate purposes.

Allegations of research or publication misconduct must be handled carefully and assessed on the basis of credible evidence. The journal will provide relevant parties with an appropriate opportunity to respond before reaching editorial decisions, where applicable. Confidential information obtained during editorial assessment must not be disclosed or used for purposes unrelated to the evaluation of the matter.

Differences in astronomical methodology, legal interpretation, or scholarly opinion do not in themselves constitute research misconduct. Such differences should be evaluated through reasoned argument, appropriate evidence, and respectful academic dialogue.

6. Publication and Accessibility

Accepted post-publication comments, author responses, corrections, retractions, and other relevant editorial notices may be published on the journal's website or through other appropriate publication mechanisms. Published materials should clearly identify the original article and provide sufficient context for readers to understand the issues raised and the outcome of the editorial assessment.

Where appropriate, corrections and retractions should be linked to the original article so that readers are aware of relevant updates to the scholarly record. The journal is committed to maintaining accessible and transparent records of substantive post-publication concerns and their outcomes.

Through this policy, Al-Hilal: Journal of Islamic Astronomy seeks to foster constructive scholarly dialogue, encourage critical evaluation of published research, address legitimate concerns regarding research accuracy and integrity, and strengthen the reliability and credibility of scholarship in Islamic astronomy and related disciplines.
