This article attempts to compare the concept of ascetism in Islamic and Christian traditions with reference to Abu Hamid al-Ghazali dan Francis of Assisi. It will also elaborate their contrasts, especially relates to the issue of religious traditions and educational background. Later on, their commonalities also discussed, such as their socio-political context, the constraint of orthodoxy and sources of asceticism. In the last part, several contrasts and commonalities in their ascetical ideas and practices will be analyzed. Admittedly, there are sharp contrasts between al-Ghazali and Francis of Assisi in many ways. However, since asceticism is a common phenomenon in all religions and possible influence in both ways, their asceticism is similar in many ways. Certainly, the main contrast lies on the difference of their tradition. Although having similar roots, Islam and Christianity have different outlook. Islam is more legalistic than Christianity is. The second contrast is the educational background of the two persons. Al-Ghazali is a scholar par excellence whereas Francis of Assisi is not. It is this difference that leads them to interpret the teaching of their tradition differently.
