Abstract

Sharī‘a and  Sufism are  two  sciences which  are  very closely interrelated. The implementation of both is a manifestation of a deep sense of faith: Sharī‘a reflects the embodiment of the practice of faith on the outward aspect while Sufism reflects the embodiment of the practice of faith on the inward aspect. Thus a person can only be considered a true Muslim, if he has been able to practice the guidance of Sharī‘a and Sufism simultaneously. Here comes the  question:  “How is the exact relationship between  Sharī‘a and  Sufism?” and  “Can the practice  of Sharī‘a be combined or integrated with the practice  of Sufism?” rise because Sharī‘a is exoteric (physical), while Sufism is esoteric (psychological/mental). It is mostly assumed that they have sharp differences/ gap, so they are considered separate parts  of islamic teachings that  have no relationship  or interconnection. This paper  attempts to answer  the questions mentioned above by analyzing the methods used by schoolars as well as the references they refer to.
