
Artificial Intelligence Policy
Overview
Economica: Jurnal Ekonomi Islam acknowledges the increasing integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies in academic writing, data analysis, and editorial processes. When applied responsibly and ethically, these tools can enhance linguistic quality, analytical efficiency, and overall scholarly communication. Nevertheless, inappropriate or undisclosed use may compromise research integrity, originality, and academic accountability.
This policy aims to provide clear guidance for authors, reviewers, and editors regarding the responsible and transparent use of AI technologies, in alignment with the principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and established norms of Islamic academic ethics.
The journal emphasizes that all published manuscripts must fundamentally reflect human intellectual contribution and scholarly judgment, in accordance with Islamic values such as amanah (trustworthiness), ṣidq (truthfulness), and ‘adl (fairness). This policy will be reviewed and updated periodically to ensure continued relevance in response to evolving technologies and best practices in scholarly publishing.
Foundational Principles
Economica: Jurnal Ekonomi Islam adopts the following principles:
- Human Accountability: Authors, reviewers, and editors bear full responsibility for the accuracy, validity, and originality of their work.
- Transparency: The use of AI tools must be disclosed clearly and completely.
- Supplement, Not Substitute: AI may assist but cannot replace human reasoning, creativity, or moral agency.
- Ethical Integrity: All AI use must comply with COPE, Islamic ethical teachings, and data protection laws.
- Editorial Oversight: The Editor-in-Chief and Publisher reserve the right to decide whether AI use is appropriate in submitted works.
For Authors
Permitted Uses of AI
Authors may use AI tools only for supportive, non-substantive tasks, such as:
- Copy-editing or proofreading (grammar, syntax, spelling, structure).
- Language translation with author verification of accuracy.
- Creating explanatory diagrams or conceptual visualizations based on verified data.
- Using AI for ideation or reference discovery similar to traditional search engines..
Prohibited Uses of AI
AI tools must not be used to:
- Writing substantive content (abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, or conclusion).
- Generating, manipulating, or fabricating data, figures, or tables.
- Producing literature reviews or summarizing prior research on behalf of the author.
- Creating unverified citations or references.
- Generating or altering factual or evidential images..
Disclosure Requirement
Authors must fully disclose any use of AI tools at the time of submission.
A disclosure statement should appear in the Acknowledgments section or in a designated AI Declaration Statement, including:
“This manuscript utilized [AI Tool Name, Version] for [specific purpose, e.g., grammar correction or reference organization]. The authors verified and are responsible for all final content.”
Basic proofreading (e.g., grammar or spelling correction) does not require disclosure.
AI tools must not be credited as authors or co-authors.
Author Responsibility
All authors remain fully accountable for:
- The accuracy, validity, and integrity of the manuscript.
- Ensuring that all AI-assisted content has been reviewed, verified, and edited by humans.
- Upholding research ethics in line with Islamic principles, including honesty, transparency, and avoidance of deceit (gharar).
Authorship
In accordance with COPE’s position statement, AI tools and LLMs cannot be credited as authors, as they:
- Cannot conceptualize research or exercise scholarly judgment.
- Cannot accept responsibility or assign copyright.
- Are not accountable for ethical or scientific integrity.
For Reviewers
Permitted Uses of AI
Reviewers may use AI tools only for non-confidential, supportive tasks such as:
- Improving the clarity or readability of their review report.
- Checking factual details without exposing manuscript content.
Prohibited Uses of AI
- Uploading any part of the manuscript into AI tools is strictly prohibited, as it breaches confidentiality and may violate data protection principles.
- AI tools must not be used to analyze, summarize, or evaluate manuscripts on behalf of the reviewer.
- Reviewers remain solely responsible for the intellectual content and conclusions of their review.
Reviewer Responsibility
Reviewers must:
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all manuscripts.
- Report any suspicion of AI misuse (e.g., fabricated data or AI-generated text) to the editorial board.
- Exercise independent scholarly judgment in line with COPE and Islamic ethical principles of fairness (‘adl) and trust (amanah).
For Editors
Permitted Uses of AI
Editors may employ AI tools only for administrative and non-decisional functions, such as:
- Managing editorial workflows or communications.
- Conducting similarity or plagiarism checks.
- Language clarity improvements in administrative communication.
Prohibited Uses of AI
Editors must not use AI to:
- Upload manuscripts or correspondence into AI systems
- Draft, summarize, or make editorial decisions.
- Process or store confidential manuscripts or correspondence in external AI systems.
- Replace human ethical judgment or scholarly discernment.
Editorial Responsibility
Editors are responsible for:
- Verifying AI disclosures by authors and reviewers.
- Ensuring compliance with ethical standards and addressing any violation.
- Maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of the peer review and editorial process.
Ethical Commitment and Compliance
Economica: Jurnal Ekonomi Islam upholds ethical AI use consistent with both COPE and Islamic ethical frameworks, emphasizing:
- Truthfulness (ṣidq) and accountability (mas’uliyyah) in research.
- Transparency in declaring AI use to maintain trust among all stakeholders.
- Data privacy and intellectual property protection throughout the publication process.
Consequences of Non-Compliance
Non-compliance with this policy may result in:
- Manuscript rejection or article retraction for authors.
- Removal from the reviewer database for reviewers violating confidentiality.

Publisher’s Use of AI
