Economic Independence of Single-Parent Families: A Conceptual Analysis based on Islamic Economic Principles

Single-parent families are economically vulnerable because of unstable earnings, limited productive resources, heavy caregiving burdens, and weak institutional support. Studies on Islamic social finance and the welfare of single-parent families exist, but they have rarely been brought together within an empowerment framework grounded in maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah. This study develops such a framework to strengthen the sustainable economic independence of single-parent families. Using an integrative literature review with conceptual synthesis, it examines scholarly works, policy documents, and Islamic economics literature from 2010 to 2025. The core values of tawḥīd, amānah, ‘adl, iḥsān, and maṣlaḥah are linked to the objectives of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah. The synthesis yields four interconnected pathways. Islamic social finance builds productive capacity through access to capital and risk protection. Islamic financial literacy improves household financial decisions. Ethical entrepreneurship supports sustainable halal livelihoods. Community-based social support widens social capital and economic opportunity. The study's main contribution is a single maqāṣid-based model that explains how these mechanisms work together rather than in isolation. The framework offers a basis for empirical testing and gives zakat institutions, waqf managers, and policymakers a reference for designing empowerment programs that go beyond short-term assistance.
