Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of project-based chemistry laboratory learning, utilizing natural materials, in improving students' scientific literacy and critical thinking skills1. Traditional chemistry education often focuses on theory, which limits students' ability to apply concepts in real-world situations. To address this, a quasi-experimental design was employed, with an experimental group using natural indicators (e.g., purple cabbage extract), eggshell waste and vinegar in laboratory projects and a control group receiving conventional instruction. Post-test assessments revealed that the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in both scientific literacy and critical thinking. The project-based approach encouraged students to apply scientific concepts, analyze problems critically, and connect lessons to daily life. These findings suggest that incorporating environmentally friendly and contextual materials into chemistry learning can enhance essential 21st-century skills. The study's hypothesis was supported by an independent sample t-test, which showed a statistically significant difference in learning outcomes between the two groups (Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 < 0.05).
