Development of Three Tier Chemistry Equilibrium Test to Assessment Higher Order Thinking Skills Based on Brookhart Category

The study aims to develop and validate Three Tier Chemistry Equilibrium Multiple Choice Test–HOTS (TTCEMCT–HOTS). The method used in this study is Research and Development (R&D) based on indicators of higher order thinking according to Brookhart (2010). The development procedure begins with a preliminary study, product draft design, to product development, followed by TTCEMCT–HOTS empirical analysis to determine the test instrument developed based on validity, reliability, level of difficulty, and discriminating power. The implementation of the TTCEMCT–HOTS instrument is carried out on class XI students of SMAN 4 South Tangerang City. The results of the study: (1) the developed TTCEMCT–HOTS instrument met the criteria of 32 valid questions, the reliability coefficient was 0.82 with a very high category, the item difficulty level was moderate, and had good discriminating power; (2) identified 46.42% of students were able to solve HOTS questions, while 53.58% of other students were not yet able; (3) the TTCEMCT–HOTS instrument received a positive response of 80.6% in the good category. This study is expected to provide an alternative in measuring students' higher order thinking skills using a three-tier test instrument that is integrated with the HOTS indicator.
