Abstract

Accessible signed communication is essential for deaf students’ participation in elementary education, yet the feasibility and classroom use of sign-oriented video media to support interpersonal communication require further investigation. This study aims to develop and preliminarily evaluate Kosaisyarat, a sign-oriented instructional video designed to support interpersonal communication among deaf elementary school students. The study employed a research and development approach guided by the ADDIE model, incorporating expert validation and a one-group pretest–posttest evaluation involving eight fourth-grade deaf students at State Special School (SDLB) in Semarang, Indonesia. Data were collected through observations, interviews, documentation, expert validation sheets, student-response questionnaires, and interpersonal communication assessments. The findings revealed favorable media and subject-matter expert evaluations, with feasibility scores of 86.6% and 96%, respectively. Four student-feedback items scored between 85 and 95, while classroom observations documented students attending to the video, imitating signs, and participating in learning activities. A paired-samples t-test indicated significantly higher interpersonal communication scores following implementation (p = .009). However, the small sample and absence of a comparison group limit causal interpretations. These findings contribute preliminary evidence for integrating signed vocabulary, visual content, and teacher-guided interaction, with implications for accessible elementary instruction and future controlled evaluations.
